TCPoly Applications Engineer – Advanced Composites Manufacturing

Roles and Responsibilities

This position will work on both application engineering with customers as well as internal research and development. Working for a startup engineering company, the applicant will be exposed to wide variety of tasks in a fast-paced work environment. The two main areas of focus are working with an internal team to develop next generation composite 3D printing materials, hardware, and control strategies and to work with customers to 3D print heat transfer components. Responsibilities include:

    • Work with customers to design/alter parts to optimize for 3D printing and thermal performance
    • Optimize 3D printing processes to print parts with required dimensional tolerances
    • Fabricate prototype parts to deliver to customers for validation testing
    • Develop standard operating procedures and quality checks for printing new materials
    • Collaborate with other engineers/researchers on R&D projects
    • Develop new composites 3D printing materials and print strategies
    • Travel to visit customers and trade shows (occasional)

Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or closely related discipline.
    • Experience working in a hands-on engineering environment
    • Excellent written, oral, and presentation communication skills
    • Excellent critical-thinking skills and the ability to independently develop creative ideas
    • Ability to manage time wisely and map out experimental plans to meet deadlines
    • Demonstrated ability to contribute collaboratively to a team
    • Experience with 3D printing, heat transfer, or polymer engineering preferred
    • Experience with part design in CAD software preferred

TCPoly Engineering Internship – 3D Printing of Advanced Composite Materials

Roles and Responsibilities

The intern will be responsible for extruding, printing and testing new composite materials for the fused deposition modeling 3D printing process. They will directly interact with senior leadership and customers to ensure printed part quality and timely delivery of prototypes and extruded filaments. The intern will also be responsible for printing sample parts for thermal and mechanical testing and will be expected to build test rigs and collect/interpret data.

Qualifications

Knowledge of heat transfer, 3D printing, and having completed related coursework or relevant work experience. Experience with SolidWorks or related 3D modeling software. Aptitude for fixing and designing electronic systems and ability to utilize data acquisition hardware and software (such as LabVIEW) to perform heat transfer or related experiments. 

    • At least 2 years completed of degree in materials science, mechanical engineering, or related discipline
    • Ability to work independently to solve problems
    • Ability to coordinate with a team to complete larger project tasks
    • Strong communication skills
    • Experience with real time control of 3D printers, robotics, or other hardware preferred
    • Previous experience with FDM 3D printing is preferred but not required
